Steam Tractor Whistle adjusting
I have a valve on the whistle to limit how much steam it gets. It was set a little too tight, so needed a little adjustment.

This Troy Engberg Steam engine is running at the Central States Threshermen Reunion in Pontiac IL. It's running a Gould water pump that is almost 100 years old. It took a bit to get it primed, but once that was done, it pumped like a champ.

Here's my little model steam plant. The boiler is a 4" Maccsteam boiler with a built in super heater. It runs on propane/butane mix. The engine is a Cotswold Heritage Gryphon with two cylinders with 3/4" bore and 1" stroke. Also included are PM Research feed water tank, feed water pump, whistle, generator and lubricator. The exhaust from the engine goes into a condenser that also contains a fee...

What is the diameter?
Do you want to sell the boiler and p.m research #4 engine
Do you have the the p.m research #4 engine still ik they have castings but my husband dont have the tools to finish one but id like to buy it for my husband
I do. I got this one from eBay. That's probably your best bet.
@@CHIPWAHL yeah but my husband dont have machine tools too finish it ebay sells casting kits and thats not something we are looking to do we would like to buy a running complete engine instead
@@CHIPWAHL do you have the boiler and engine both still because I want to ask you if you're interested in selling both because I need the engine and boiler for my 14 ft boat that I'm building
I don’t have the boiler any more, but I might be willing to sell the engine.
I'm from Czech and I love steam locomotive, but I don't know this locomotive :/
It was the 17th
Its a Czech locomotive... Ouch
Is that bad?
What size of copper boiler would you recommend for this model engine? I have a #4 as well and would like to change it over to steam.. I've built the small PMR vertical boiler but would like to make a big brother large enough to put my #4 to some use.
This boiler is 6 square feet of heated surface and about half a square foot of grate area on the new fire box. The grate area is the limitation, so I'd suggest something a little bigger if you want a #4 to do some real work.
did you sell it ? if not, contact me please ?
This engine is for sale, correct? If so I'm interested!
I miss the Shay being in Iowa
This is great!
I prefer running my engines backward. Whenever they're not running backwards it bogs me. I don't know why :P
*bugs not bogs :)
What brand & model is the corn grinder ??
beautiful set up, top shelf gear all around.
pretty sweet.
I was wondering if you have run the generator yet? I'm thinking about ordering a Gryphon but I would like to find out how much steam it needs to really crank up the generator. I have a Stuart 504 boiler that I was thinking about using. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
this is super, good pump
I used a burner from a Colman stove. It's not quite powerful enough when the engine is under load. I built a 'real' firebox in which I can burn wood or coal. See my later posts for video of it.
Great setup! I am building one right now. What did you use for the burner?
you don't want oil in the boiler from the engine exhaust....I have steam vids of the same boiler (its a kit) I built mine....its huge
I know right? When you finally see something this big running, you don't want to see it inching along like a snail, you want to see it running full bore. Open that steam valve up and let's see what that 'monster' can do.
Excellent set up!
this engine looks like the real life version of my railway tv engine named terrior
I got it off eBay from a guy going by steam4u. He lives in Michigan and has built several like this. Sorry, I'm not remembering his name. He has a website also, but don't remember that either.
Isn't the 12 from Georgetown coming to iowa?
it kinda seems like your valve has excessive play in it. lots of blow by...
I have a video posted of running pretty close to its rated speed. I didn't actually count the revolutions, but it is running much faster than we normally run it at. I don't remember if Eugene (Duane moved away several years ago) had it cranked up to get a little extra oil up around the top of the bearings or why it was 'opened up' more, but if you check out my video you will see it running faster than in any other video unless we do it again sometime. For some reason I couldn't post a link.
how much power?
I'd like to see more of this engine running.....possibly loaded up doing some work. What ya think?
That's the air supply that's making it run.
What was those tubes?
@28kingIV Steam engines have maximum torque at minimum speed. You just wait for the pressure to build up in the boiler and then release the kraken
The Wheelock engine was brought to the Lake Region Pioneer Threshermen's Association's showgrounds at Dalton, Minnesota in 1981. It was donated by the Carus family of Peru, Illinois. The engine was built in 1896. 30" bore. 54" stroke. 1100 h.p. weight: 110 ton. Flywheel: 25 ft. 4 in. diameter.
There is one more! In Dalton Minnesota (USA ) it's called the wheellock. I would say it's nearly exact to the one in thevideo right down to the color!
@caserules1 this engine will be returning to the Old Threshers grounds in 7-10 years
This engine is no longer at the show i belive its in colorado
Where did you buy that valve?
There's only one left, and we've got it at Barnoldswick, you need steam up to run it !!, The mill and belting isn't on the other side of the engine, but that's life !!
Reminds me of the steam engine we have over here. It's only 3/4 the size but the position of it and the shed behind it initially reminded me of the shed our steam engine sits in.
The PMR #3 has a 3/16-40 inlet and outlet
Is the steam inlet on the pm research engine 3/16-40?
@MyDavid1960 This engine is at the Silver Creek Museum south of Freeport, Illinois at the former site of the Stephenson County Poor Farm and subsequent Stephenson County Nursing Home. It originally worked a mill set at the Matheson-Hegler zinc mill in LaSalle, Illinois.
@NathansBackwoods Actually all oiling is accomplished without stopping the engine at all. The main bearings each have three pint-capacity drip oilers, the wrist pin would have a "Trombone" oiler with a stationary pot. The crankpin has a stationary rotary oiler, and the crosshead is dripped from above and drop from below. The cylinder and valves are oiled using a mechanical lubricator which is painted red and at the leftmost area of the valve actuation mechanism.
Just so you know, this engine did NOT make blanks for coinage. Only the machinery of the US Mint does so. This engine was one of the medium-sized engines of the Mattheson-Hegler zinc mill in LaSalle, Illinois. Basically it'd run a series of roller-presses that would mush an ingot of zinc the size of a small auto into plates of various thicknesses for many uses and also its connection to Freeport itself - the raw sheets used to make the casing for dry-cell batteries for Burgess Battery.
@mikes47jeep It can't run at it's working speed as 1). the governor is not complete so it'd overspeed, and 2). Even at 40 RPM or so it'll quickly run the boiler out of steam. Duane and I had actually done that one night when he forgot to shut off the boiler and it was getting close to closing time. So he shut off the boiler and opened up the valve and in under 5 minutes it drew down the boiler and was coasting on its own inertia.
@7100hammer Yep, it's running backward. I don't remember why I did it that way, but it ran nicely.
i want to see it at its "working speed" not just creeping along
